Repair of your product any brand is no problem with the skilled people we have, cimage002.jpg

and the suppliers who support us.Our experience is in the preparation of

economic proposals

Save time and money call us, some proposals are obvious,

because of our experience.

Replacement  motor controls are available from

many suppliers, we propose the most suitable ones for you.

We  help with guaranteed proposals for New Applications

By asking relevant questions about your application, applying our knowledge and

experience, and making guaranteed proposal.

In a  Breakdown situation we can provide experienced tradesmen to repair

your equipment, and if required commission it to ensure the root cause of failure

is taken care of.

Proposals

Our policy: at least two proposals

Our policy is to give you at least two proposals with relative advantages of  replacement

products, or the product repair if applicable.

Completion dates, are fundamental for you to decide the economics.

Over the phone proposals are only possible in certain cases, call and find Otherwise

we need to carry out a check and report.

We will give a Free 15 minute check and report within the workshop.

Otherwise an agreed charge will apply

Fundamental control Productscimage006.gif

Direct on Line control

Most basic of controls uses a contactor , combined with a current

sensitive overload device.

Usually has a simple red pushbutton for stop, and green for start.

May be in an IP 56 enclosure for wet environments, or

mounted in a control panel.

Very common up to 7.5 kW .

May be used on all sizes of motors , depends on the supply capacity.

(Big Motors draw a lot of current, may drop the voltage too much on start up if the

supply cable is small)

Star Delta Startercimage008.gif

Used on larger motors to decrease the current taken on start up

Motor will start with windings connected in star.

This supplies effectively 230 volts to each phase of the motor.

This results in a reduced current taken by the motor,

this results in a reduced torque on starting.

Starting off load is idea for this device.

More expensive than a direct on line starter.

Electronic Soft Starter

Used on all sizes of motor to reduce the starting torque and current taken

To reduce supply voltage drop, also wear and tear on machine parts.

Power saving Intelligent Soft Starter

This device acts as an electronic soft starter, with an added intelligence to reduce the

supply voltage to themotor when it is lightly loaded.

This device is more expensive than the Electronic soft starter, but can pay for itself in

weeks of use in the correct application.

AC Variable speed controls

As Replacement units

We  commonly fit these to replace smaller DC motor applications.

The reason being the reduced maintenance cost.

These also commonly replace the Mechanical Variator which is also high in maintenance.

New applications

New applications are huge and varied from simple precision speed control, within 0.01 %,

with either tachometer feedback or tachometer less Vector drives. Vector drive use

impulses from within the winding to tell how fast the rotor is rotating. Through to the

positional precision achievable with encoders, where two or ten motors may operate

in synchronism with each other to carry out a process.

Considerations on the applications  are:

The load speed/torque characteristic

The drive speed torque characteristic

The need for control of torque, or speed

( Torque control is commonly used in tensioning applications where paper of plastic

needs to be rolled speed control is used on extruders, or on process which will vary if

the speed varies. Is the load direction going to vary? In plastic extrusion the film needs

to leave the die at precisely the correct rate. The controlling motor may be called the

nip roller. On start up the motor pulls the product from the die, but when rolling up the

product tension is needed to make the roll quality. This tension is transmitted to the

nip motor, so this ends up having to pull backward, even though it is rotating forward

at a constant speed. This is a called a four quadrant drive.

DC Variable speed controls

On small Motors under 1.5 kW these speed controls are still the cheaper option,

Maintenance is the disadvantage of these small motors.

They come in a huge variety of specifications, as per ac controls, depending on the

application. Dc Drive controls usually give a larger starting torque for the same power

output when compared with AC controls. Most economic to fit a replacement DC drive

where one has failed, But if reliability and maintenance are an issue, ac drives are

worth weighing the economics.

Baldor 0.37 kW 1750 rpm motor and KBIC drive.

Call to site, found dc motor damaged by running very worn brushes.

Also the electronic drive damaged by the nature of the load.

Put proposals on repair of existing motor and drive, and replacement

with ac. Drive and motor. Supply new ac motor, make and fit adaptor to suit \

metric motor mounting in imperial frame. Supply and mount new ac drive, connect

and commission

Call to site, check operating parameters, make proposal for original and

alternative brand.Supply alternative only as requested

Extra ordinary Work we have carried out

Parvex Servo Motor,280/37Amps,2400 Rpm , eimage032.jpgMod-LC640TFR0514,

Faulty encoder position, another company had serviced this motor, and

did not record accurately the encoder position on the shaft. Have spare

electronic drives coupled to act as power supply with encoder feedback.

Test encoder, and by elimination find encoder position. Make up a test

rig, and instructions so that the test can be repeated at any future date easily.

Extra ordinary Work we have carried outcimage013.jpg

Reliance 10 hp AC servo motor , connected to Lenze drive, tripping out

intermittently. Two motors connected to a common shaft were driving

one roller through 0.5 turn in electrical synchronism with another two

motors on another drive roller. Process waited 0.2 seconds before

repeating the cycle. Found the drive was in fact overheating, check

current output to each motor on each phase. Because of transient nature

of the work cycle use datalogger over cycle time. Found motors were

identical, and performing fine. Output current was at times excessive.

cimage015.jpg

Data logging showed an unusual harmonic each 4 work cycles.

Checking of earth system and all machine and control connections

finally found a loose encoder coupling, the loose coupling combined

with the response time of the feedback loop mean that we created an

unstable control system with  the worn coupling. New coupling rubber fixed it.

This work carried out for Sam Pomare

Engineering Manager of Visy Board.

Extra ordinary Work we have carried out

Truck Refrigeration Compressor tripping intermittantly

230 volt SEW variable speed drive connected to a 1.5 kW refrigeration compressor.

Trips were so infrequent, that we could not stand there and view the problem,  the

importance of one trip was sufficient that it could loose the quality of the frozen goods.

Connect datalogging equipment to the drive output to have the  see if the problem was

current,  voltage or drive related, Have datalogger record 1 second of waveforms before

and after a start and stop. Traced fault to compressor sometimes starting with

insufficient delay, for the compressor to unload. Fit time delay relay.

Extra ordinary Work cimage017.jpg

75 kW 1425 rpm motor driving Rollercoaster at

Rainbows end. Measure energy used prior to fitting

energy saving powerboss, Fit Powerboss Intelligent

soft starter, Carry out energy audit. Found 25%

savings over identical period, this represented a 6

month payback on the capital cost of $2000.
